Ratchet and Clank 2 - The Sophomore Slump

With the first Ratchet and Clank game out of the way, its straight over to the second one and with that I quickly realized why, when people talk about how they loved the original games, they usually talk exclusively about the first or third game. Yeah this one isn't great.

Firstly like I did before, is the general storyline. For some reason the designers thought that because the two main heroes clashed before, they should be friendly and completely free of any conflict. This unfortunately clashes horribly with the main plot where the heroes repeatedly assist villains despite all evidence showing them that they are doing the wrong thing or are believing the wrong people, now Ratchet not understanding this works, he's shown in the past that he's a little too positive and believing when it comes to people. Clank? He should know far better given the events of the previous game, and yet for the sake of keeping both heroes happy and docile, he may as well barely feature. Its a shame because the voice-work is actually brilliant.

Gameplay wise the game is a bit of a mess too. It fixes several things the original had problems with, strafing has now been added so battles feel less wonky and pausing the game mid-weapon switch fixes some of the clumsy mid-battle issues I had with the previous game. The first half of the game in fact is very promising thanks to a variety of colourful and  interesting looking levels, fast and frantic battles with new weapons that feel like they really pack a punch compared to the ones from the previous game. The issues really come up in the latter half of the game as instead of applying more advanced AI to enemies, the game instead resorts to placing waves upon waves of bullet sponge enemies, dragging battles on far too long and turning a fun game into a sloggy and artificially difficult mess thanks to also spacing the checkpoints out too far from each other.

It even manages to dip into irritating territory with the new space-ship battles thanks to wonky controls causing each battle to devolve into blind blasting and hoping that a random ship doesn't decide to race into you off-screen. Overall I would recommend people to just skip this and make their way over to the third game instead.
