7th Guest - Feeeling Lonely?

FMV gaming was a weird little thing that happened around the early to mid-nineties where suddenly gaming wanted real actors and a feeling of a TV show and/or film to accompany their gaming experience. Overall however FMV gaming in my eyes has aged badly and overall was a bit of a failed attempt at bringing movie-like film techniques to games, this is down to poor acting, low budgets and cheesy storylines and nothing really showcases all of this (and more) than one of the games that really kickstarted this off, the adventure title '7th Guest' by Trilobyte software.

The best way to really talk about the 7th Guest really is to compare it to another puzzle/adventure series that's around now, Professor Layton. Both series require you to go in and solve puzzles, a lot of which don't really have anything to do with the actual plot or setting, but ones that for some reason push the plot forward. Unlike Professor Layton however, the puzzles in 7th Guest seem almost determined to drive you insane thanks to a series of inane answers, word puzzles that require you to construct sentences that make little sense and irritating mazes made even more annoying by repeated sound-cues on every dead-end.

One of the more 'fairer' puzzles
Also as I mentioned above, the FMV 'acting' is laughable at best with hammy acting and poor effects taking centre stage over anything else, the storyline is hit with this too with stupid plot-twists that make no sense taking centre stage over anything interesting.

Essentially, unless you have red-tinted glasses welded directly onto your face, I would recommend to steer clear of this so-called 'classic' as all it manages to be is a showcase of aged mechanics.
