Canyon Capers - Old and Falling Apart

Canyon Capers is a bit of a weird game, placed onto steam by Kiss, this is basically a remake of an old DOS game (Dino Jnr in 'Canyon Capers') where in each level, you have a task, be it collecting all of a certain item, defusing bombs or just finding an exit. Its definitely got its feet firmly planted in retro territory that's for sure...

It however manages to go too far with this aspect to the point where the game feels like a grind to play with the simple objectives being easily completed, something assisted via unlimited lives throughout each level, losing health or a life only really affecting the end score and little else. The larger areas however, compared to the beginning smaller ones, are just no fun to roam around, multiple dead-ends and random side-tunnels everywhere often turn the game into a chore. There's a bigger issue however and that's the general look of the game and... there's little to no polish outside of the iOS-style menu screen.

The game itself manages to look hideous at times, low animations mean characters just don't flow right and a overuse of stretched and simplistic sprites along with random photo-esque statues makes the whole thing look quite amateurish, akin to a mid-90s net-yaroze game. This feel is further pushed by irritating sound effects and occasionally glitchy and imprecise jumping. Its a shame because the game at times is really fun but the complete lack of polish in any area just makes this impossible to recommend.
