The Fourth Wave

Continuing on the sea of games that have already been completed, we have the fourth set. We have Sprites, we have Puzzles and then finally some cubey confusion. Lets go!

Noitu Love 2 - Devolution - An incredibly fun action platformer that makes me feel as if I am playing an old 'Treasure' megadrive title ala Gunstar Heroes. The sprites are big and colourful, the plot outlandish and the action fast and frantic. Oh and the bosses clever and memorable.

Painkiller: Black Edition - A incredibly fun FPS title where in order to proceed, you gotta kill everything in a room then move on. Great pacing helps this title as well as some amazing levels (Nothing beats the 'Asylum' level, full of dark rooms, spooky music and enemies that can blow themselves up leading to a quick death). Amazing. Just stay away from most of the sequels please.

Painkiller Hell & Damnation - The 'remake' of Painkiller black is quite a fun title, shoot anything that moves and then move on. The only reason sadly its decent is probably because its taking some of the best bits wholesale from the only Painkiller game worth going through on Steam (Painkiller Black).

Peggle Extreme - Okay I am kinda cheating here. For those who don't know, this version of Peggle is free to download from steam and contains 5/6 small levels to 'Celebrate' the release of the Orange Box compilation. Its cheery enough and nice as a taster to the whole Peggle thing.

Post Apocalyptic Mayhem - I actually quite enjoy this every now and then, a very fast and explosion filled racer, great for multiplayer sessions and is very often being sold for dirt cheap in the Galastore. Just don't go in expecting greatness.

Postal 2: Complete - This is probably a very divisive title and for very good reason. The whole layout of the game itself is genius, split into several days and each day giving rather mundane sounding things to do such as 'Pick up Milk' or 'Go to Book Signing'. That said its completely up to you how you complete each action. Do we get the Milk the normal way by paying for it in the store or do we face the wrath of the police and the owner by stealing? Its totally up to you. Where the game falls down is that it is VERY politically incorrect. We have offensive stereotypes of blacks, Asians, gays and arabs. We have loads of poo and urine based jokes, cats that can be used as silencers, various sex jokes, chopped up elephants and the ability to pee on somebody until they throw up, decapitate said person, set the head on fire and kick it at someone.

Most of said content is avoidable though (unless you go into the weekend expansion) so its up to you basically how wrong it gets.

PostMortem: One Must Die - A rather... odd experiment of a game. Here you play as death and you must take one persons life at a charity gala. You can either pick at random or talk to each person to make a decision. The person that you take and how you talk to people, influencing their later decisions, shapes the ending that is given. Its very odd, very story-driven and hard to recommend outside of people who want to really give something new a try.

Psychonauts - An incredibly fun title. There is a good reason Double-Fine is given such high billing by gamers and this is one of the main reasons why. Packed with humour, memorable characters, levels and moments. Filled with silly pieces, interesting backstory hidden away and some really 'The devs thought of EVERYTHING' moments. Did I mention memorable levels? Lemme go through some of em quick. You got stomping through a mini-city pretending to be Godzilla, throwing yourself around a level based around art, collecting cards while battling a large bull as well as several Mexican wrestlers. Oh and there's also the Milkman... I've said too much.. RUN PEOPLE RUN!

Puzzle Agent 1 + 2 - Another double-up of games since both cover the same territory. Both are basically what happens when you take the Professor Layton series and attempt to have the puzzles make sense in relation to the plot. What does that give you? Gnome armies, secret cults, FBI coverups and duck courier services. Trust me it all makes perfect sense...ish... Part 2 is a little 'Twin Peaksey' for me. Very good games though.

Red Faction - Its a perfectly serviceable FPS game and was good for its time... Now? Things have changed and some bits of this dont feel great. Sure its nice to have variety in your game but to throw in not one, but TWO forced Stealth levels is just fustrating. Stealth is good if you are in a game designed for stealthyness... Stealth is not good if you are just chucking it in for the hell of it. Also, while the 'Blowing up everything' is good, it rarely sees any practical use at all. Basically its a good enough but dated FPS title.

RUSH - Anyone who ever played Chu Chu Rocket will be right at home here with this puzzle game. Placing arrows to make blocks reach the exit is the name of it all and its amazingly simple but can get oh so difficult. Its worth pointing out that it goes for cheap often in sales so grab it if you want a nice puzzle hit.

Next Wave: Hidden Objects, A Magical Notebook, Childhood promises and... bzzzzt... *ERROR. ERROR*
